Book Review Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption

Modern Day Mother Teresa

I’m not sure how long I’ve admired Mother Teresa and people like her.  People who have a deep desire to help mankind far beyond the average person’s desire. They have a longing, an ache really that cannot be satisfied any other way.  Their  passion for their mission far outweighs any earthly convenience. To not do what they are compelled to do would kill their spirit and soul.  Katie Davis is also one such person.  She like Mother Teresa was called to work with orphans. They share a Catholic faith  with a strong belief in God, a love for Him and a dependence on Him completely for the work they do.   You  can’t really call it work because it feels very natural.

Kisses from Katie  is written by Katie Davis with the help of Beth Clark. In it  Katie shares the trials and joys  of  her calling to missionary work in Uganda.   Her desire for missionary work began in adolescence.  Mother Teresa was one of  her heroines. To her family’s surprise,  she announced  at her 16th birthday dinner that she would do missionary work for a year after high school graduation.

At a time when other young, talented, intelligent,  women were going to college, she went to Uganda.  The question is asked numerous times “why”?  Why would a young person trade a nice, comfortable life in the U.S.  for a life surrounded by severe poverty, dire health conditions,  heat, dirt, insects, rodents and no family?  Her answer time and time again is a call to do what God has said we all are called to do.  The love of the children is her driving force. She can’t let them go and so she is the one who lets go of everything to live with them, love them, adopt them, and  educate them.  It’s a wonderful reminder that when we live our purpose we are fulfilled.

The spiritual maturity of Katie comes through on  each page.  She journals her story and that is also intertwined within the book.  From time to time it can sound a bit preachy but then you realize these are her thoughts, her conversations with God and her immense desire to share the good news of Jesus to everyone.  She reminds us how hard and unfair life can be but that the God we serve is great and we can see his goodness.  Miracles do exist.

This book raised a question for me again. Are there some people in this world who are called to do more than the average person?  My answer is “yes” and she is one of them.  Just as we admire world leaders, athletes, and  billionaires, we can also admire the lifework of kindhearted, self-sacrificing people like Katie Davis. I believe that have a longing and that that longing is answered by God to work in an incredible and unconventional way. So to her and others like her  I say thank you. My life is blessed by their life’s work.

Diet Mistakes

At any one time 1 of 3 women and 1 of 5 men are on a diet. When it comes to dieting there are a few mistakes we can avoid:

  1. Crash diets or fad diets
  2. Wrong diet
  3. Not giving the diet enough time to work
  4. No accountability
  5. Breaking through a plateau

Most people know crash and fad diets don’t work but they want fast weight loss and so millions try them anyway. Before you start any diet read about it, see if it’s safe, effective and worth staying on for a few shorts weeks or forever. I like the forever diets. That way the weight loss is slow and more permanent. Expect to lose 1/2-2lbs per week.

For years I did low fat diets only to maintain my weight and not lose. How frustrating! Once I learned that I’m a carb addict and the way I lose weight is to cut carbs the weight started coming off. Dr. Mercola’s Total Health Cookbook & Program has a short questionaire to help you figure out how you can best lose weight.

Expecting to lose weight fast is unrealistic. It didn’t come on fast and it’s not coming off fast. Give it time to come off. Let’s say you need to lose 40lbs. Then that’s equivalent to about 20-40 weeks for those pounds to come off, then work to maintain.

Starting and stopping a diet is tough on the body. It’s sends mixed messages. Before you start a diet get some accountability i.e a partner, personal trainer, nutritionist, weight loss coach, health & wellness coach (that would be me) or a weight loss program. Journaling and therefore accountability is the #1 way to lose weight. Don’t believe it, look it up. You must have someone to keep you on track. There are smartphone apps for the REALLY motivated persons. I met someone recently who was able to lose weight with an app. It can work. Take a look at this app Lose It!

What to do when you are stuck at your present weight but still need to lose? Break through a plateau with a change in exercise, increase the time or intensity. Consider a 24-48hr fast of liquids only. You just need to get down 1-2lbs to break through the plateau. That resets the body’s setpoint.

If you are going to through all the effort to lose weight make it count and never give up.

Chronic Health Conditions: What to do now?

The CDC released a study (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db100.htm) that  reveals 21% of  Americans ages 45-64 have at least 2 of  9 chronic health conditions. That’s a sad statistic that has risen in the past decade.

Those nine conditions are:

  1. heart disease
  2. high blood pressure
  3. diabetes
  4. cancer
  5. stroke
  6. asthma
  7. kidney disease
  8. chronic bronchitis
  9. emphysema.

Prevention is the best but what happens if you already have one or more of these conditions?

I believe you can still improve your health naturally by:

  • eating healthy, eat as many Mother Nature foods as possible, skip the processed stuff
  • stay active, keep moving to get your heart in shape and breath better
  • get your weight as normal as possible (BMI 19-24)
  • drink water, herbal teas, and fresh juices. Sodas taste great but don’t have  any nutritional value
  • deal with stress, get plenty of rest, sleep and relax
  • no smoking
  • let go of emotional baggage and have a positive outlook life
  • smile

Love this book… This is a Soul: The Mission of Rick Hodes by Marilyn Berger

Dr. Hodes is my new hero.  He is a doctor, Jewish, living in Ethiopia, incorporating his faith in his work. His work IS his passion.

The book chronicles his upbringing, education, medical career and now his life’s work in Ethiopia caring mostly for  sick children.   His energy is fueled by the desire to see these kids well. And his energy seems to be unending. God continually does miracles in his life and in the lives of his patients. So much so that his Jewish faith impresses his Muslim patients, their families and his co-workers.

He is single but managed to adopt some of his patients. Initially it was so he could get them health insurance but in the end it was his love of these children and their siblings that has enlarged his family. He has solicited the help of  very infuential global physicians who assist him in getting care for some of his most challenging patients.

The book is well  written by Marilyn Berger who lives in New York but traveled to Ethiopia to witness firsthand his incredible lifestyle. Her story is quite incredible as well.  In the end you will see how she gets taken in by his life and adds to her family.

I’m truly amazed by people like him who keep the human spirit alive and well in the midst of so much craziness.  He is a rare bird and deserves to have a book written about his life not only to  spread the word about the medical crisis in places like Ethiopia, but to inspire mankind by his extraordinary unselfishness. I hope that you find this book inspiring too.

This Is a Soul: The Mission of Rick Hodes

Happy Birthday Mother America

As America celebrates her 236th birthday I just want to say I’m happy to be an American.

Here lately I have begun to refer to America as “Mother America”.  We are mother America  to the world.

I started thinking this way after the earthquake in Haiti 2010.  Americans donated more than $1 billion dollars. And that’s just money. The people who volunteered to go and serve, even the celebrities who came and stayed reminds me  of a trait mothers have. Good mothers take care of their children in all kinds of circumstances, sacrificially if need be.  Whenever there is tradegy here or abroad Americans come to the rescue. And thank God we are in a position to do that.

We may be at the low end of other indicators such as education, particularly science and math, but we are the tops for compassionate care.  The world can say a lot of things about us, but not taking of care of people who are in dire need is not one of them. And I love that about America.

I pray that we will continue to lead the world in kindness, compassion, and love with our acts of financial, emotional and physical support.

May God continue to bless America…

3 Cool Apps

As apps go I probably don’t have as many as most people. But I do have a few that I absolutely love.  They are not free like the ones in my previous post but they are relatively expensive and worth every penny.

The first one solves the problems of what to do with all the passwords and logins you have to keep in your head. After about 5 that becomes an impossibility for me.  And keeping them on scraps of paper is a disaster.  Where’s that paper when you need it? Ta da … SafeWallet to the rescue. I was surprised to discover just how many logins I have. No wonder I couldn’t remember all the passwords.

The next is ToDoGenius.  It is an absolute must. The memory is just not what it used to be and I don’t care enough anymore about that fact. I simply raised the white flag,  gave up and decided I need my to-do-lists all in one place. You can create one for home and work.

Trouble getting to sleep and need some White Noise. This app is perfect for your or your child. Choose from 40 different sounds like water falls, chirping birds, ocean sounds, sprinkler, vacuum, thunder and more.

What are your favorite apps?

4 Free Cool Apps

These apps are FREE. Love them, they make life easier.  The Target App is the newest one.   I swear Target should roll out the red carpet for me when I come there. Some days I’m there when they open at 8am.

Pinterest is my newest obsession.  It’s so fun to create your own collage or vision board. I hope I don’t go to jail for stealing internet pics.

TuneIn Radio comes in handy when you are out of town or out of range of your favorite radio station.  Plus you have so many options then just local stations including international radio stations.

I will never be a super couponer.  The Michaels App has instant coupons you can use that day.  More stores need to get on the bandwagon.  Smart phones are here to stay.

See sidebar for 3 other cool apps.

Get more sleep to avoid a stroke

A new study of 5666 healthy Americans released by the American Professional Sleep Society today  revealed that getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night puts a person 4X at risk for a stroke. A stroke happens when there is decrease blood flow to the brain.  Strokes are the 4th leading cause of deaths in the US. Our bodies regenerate and renew itself when we sleep so it’s important for our overall health to get a good night of ZZZZZZs.

It still amazes me that so many people have trouble sleeping.  It’s like we are all type A personality people driven to take advantage of every waking moment. A few years ago I read a very extensive book on the topic of light and sleep  Lights Out by T.S. Wiley.  Since the invention of electricity we are able to stay up later.  Prior to that people used candles and kerosene lamps which provided minimal light.  Now we can stay up all night if we like listening to music, surfing the net, watching tv, etc.

Here’s a few tips to getting a better night sleep:

  • get up when the sun comes up (the book explains more in detail)
  • practice 10-15 meditation each day ( a time to quiet your mind, no thoughts, just focus on your breathing)
  • do not eat, drink or exercise  2 hours before bedtime
  • 1 hour prior to sleep turn everything off and dim the lights (you can light a candle if you want)
  • listen to white noise or relaxing music
